Some women who come to us for hair optimization have a crucial concern:
“I have a personal or family history of breast cancer. Is it safe for me to undergo treatment?”
This is an important question, and the short answer is: In many cases, yes—but we take a highly cautious approach.
What the Research Says
Historically, some hair loss treatments—particularly those affecting hormones—were avoided in patients with a history of breast cancer. However, recent research suggests that many treatments are safe, even for women with a history of hormone-sensitive cancers.
That being said, our approach is always conservative when making treatment decisions for patients with a personal or family history of breast cancer.
How We Personalize Your Treatment Plan
At Northwestern Hair, we never take risks with your health. If you have concerns about breast cancer, we take the following steps:
1. Consultation with an Oncology Pharmacologist
Before recommending any treatment, we consult with an oncology pharmacologist to ensure that the medications and therapies we suggest are safe for you.
2. Avoiding Hormone-Sensitive Medications
Some hair loss treatments, such as spironolactone and finasteride, work by affecting hormones. While they are effective for many women, they may not be suitable for those with a history of hormone-sensitive cancers.
Instead, we focus on:
- ACS Treatments – Our in-office Autologous Cellular Serum (ACS) treatments optimize scalp metabolism and reactivate follicles without hormonal interference.
- Non-Hormonal Medications – Minoxidil (both oral and topical) does not affect hormones and is often a safe option.
- Scalp Health Optimization – Including microneedling, laser therapy, and targeted supplements.
3. Ongoing Monitoring & Adjustments
Hair optimization is an ongoing journey. We continuously monitor your progress and adjust your regimen as needed, keeping safety as the top priority.
